Using a hinge question

Ask at a point where the next step depends on understanding. Give everyone thinking time, then collect all answers together with cards or mini whiteboards. Aim for a response within two minutes and a quick scan of the class.

Use the answer patterns to decide what to explain again, what to discuss and when to move on. A correct choice still needs sound reasoning.

Each question tests a conceptual decision. Wrong answers represent specific reasoning to investigate; a single response is not proof of a misconception. These questions have not been classroom trialled.
