Revise the key ideas

Activities

  • Playing and doing — Je joue au football uses jouer à for a game or sport; je joue du piano uses jouer de for a musical instrument. Je fais de la natation uses faire de. À + le becomes au; de + le becomes du. Learn whole verb-and-noun combinations rather than changing only the noun.
  • Leisure verbs — Je lis un roman, je regarde un film, j’écoute de la musique and je retrouve mes amis mean I read a novel, watch a film, listen to music and meet my friends. Écouter takes a direct object in these examples; do not add an English-style word for to after it.
  • Invitations — Tu veux aller au cinéma ? invites someone to go to the cinema. Oui, avec plaisir accepts; désolé, je ne peux pas declines politely. On se retrouve où et à quelle heure ? asks where and when to meet. Check the partner’s reply rather than repeating a planned line regardless of what was said.
  • Weather — Il fait beau, il fait froid and il fait chaud describe fine, cold and hot weather. Il pleut means it is raining; il neige means it is snowing. Quand il pleut, je reste à la maison links weather with an action. Do not use one English translation of is for every French weather expression.

Opinions with support

  • Useful opinion structures — J’aime, j’adore, je préfère and je n’aime pas express different preferences. À mon avis means in my opinion; je pense que introduces I think that. Je trouve ce film émouvant means I find this film moving. Develop a view with a specific feature or example rather than only très bien.
  • Adjectives and reasons — C’est amusant, passionnant, ennuyeux or fatigant describes an activity as fun, exciting, boring or tiring. Parce que gives a reason; car can also mean because in a reasoned sentence. Je préfère lire parce que je peux imaginer les personnages gives an actual justification.
  • Infinitives after verbs — J’aime lire means I like to read; je voudrais jouer means I would like to play. Each uses an infinitive, the dictionary form, after a conjugated verb, a form matched to the subject and time. Je peux nager means I can swim; je dois travailler means I must work. Do not conjugate every verb in a sequence: je peux nage is not the required pattern.
  • Wider issues — Les réseaux sociaux peuvent être utiles, mais il faut protéger ses informations personnelles means social networks can be useful, but one must protect personal information. Learn expressions to discuss benefits, drawbacks and responsibilities; language learning can go beyond favourite hobbies.

Developing an exchange

  • Agreeing and disagreeing — Je suis d’accord means I agree; je ne suis pas d’accord means I disagree. Tu as raison means you are right. Je comprends ton avis, mais … acknowledges a view before adding a different one. Give a reason respectfully rather than treating disagreement as a personal criticism.
  • Connecting ideas — Et adds; mais contrasts; parce que explains; donc introduces a consequence. Je joue dehors quand il fait beau adds a condition or time. Cependant means however. Choose a connector that expresses the real relationship between ideas, not a more elaborate word simply to make a sentence longer.
  • Object pronouns — Je regarde le film → je le regarde means I watch it. Je regarde la vidéo → je la regarde. Je lis les messages → je les lis. Le, la and les replace the thing watched or read, so the noun does not have to be repeated. These direct object pronouns normally go before the conjugated verb; je vais le regarder places le before the following infinitive.
  • Asking follow-up questions — Pourquoi ? asks for a reason; avec qui ? asks with whom; combien de fois par semaine ? asks how many times a week. Use a partner’s answer to choose the next question. Ask for clarification when needed and allow time for an answer.

Understanding viewpoints

  • Reading contrasts — Original text: J’aime les jeux vidéo, mais je préfère faire du vélo avec mes amis. Le soir, je lis parfois, car cela me détend. The speaker likes games but prefers cycling. Préfère signals a ranking; parfois qualifies the reading frequency. Do not replace all three statements with a single favourite-activity label.
  • Listening for changes — Listen for mais, pas and a corrected time or activity. A speaker may mention an activity only to reject it: je n’aime pas le tennis. Listening for isolated familiar words can therefore give the opposite answer. Replay to verify a detail after identifying the overall meaning.
  • Writing an argument — Give a viewpoint about a suitable issue, support it with a reason and example, and acknowledge a different view. Use accurate sentences before adding complexity. A model about transport, leisure or digital life is a starting point: adapt the ideas and vocabulary to express your own or a fictional perspective.
